6th Grade
Play, read, clap, tap, count out loud, and create using dotted quarter/eighth patterns, dotted half ¾ patterns, and musical ties.
Play and sing chordal and scale pattern melodies that encompass an octave on their instrument with the addition of accidentals.
Identify and perform music that uses pick-up notes, repeats, first/second endings, and fermata.
Perform a grade 1 concert band piece with good tone quality, balance, and listening skills, as well as well as develop musical independence by performing simple duets and trios in class
Play a concert Eb, and Ab scale using slur and staccato
AFTER SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES
Band students have three opportunities for after school band instruction:
El Sistema El Sistema Somerville is a daily afterschool music program that provides ensemble-based music instruction to SPS elementary and middle grades students, grades 3–8. The program offers intensive study on strings, winds and brass instruments through orchestral rehearsals, sectionals, musicianship and technique classes, chamber music, and private lessons. Students play violin, viola, cello, bass, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone. Students also receive a daily nutritious snack, academic support, recess time, cultural enrichment activities, field trips, and frequent opportunities to perform for the community. All-City Middle School Band The All-City Band, led by Mr. Fiorentino and Mrs. Sears, is a select ensemble representing all schools in Somerville. Students in 6th-8th grade may be selected to participate based on their skill and dedication. The band meets on Tuesdays in the SHS band room.
School of HONK! The School of HONK! is for students of any age or level of playing. Band members meet weekly to parade on the streets of Somerville and have fun making music in a relaxed environment. Visit www.schoolofhonk.org for more info.
