Any student can begin playing a string instrument in 4th grade and a band instrument in 5th grade. Students may select a violin, viola, cello or bass for the string instrument. For band, we offer lessons for flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone and percussion.
HOW CAN I GET AN INSTRUMENT?
There are two options for instruments: loan or rental.
Loan: If you qualify for free or reduced cost lunch in the Somerville Public Schools, then you are eligible to borrow a school instrument for the duration of the year. There is a one-time payment of $20 for violin, violin, flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and percussion, $30 for saxophone and cello, and $40 for bass. You must sign a contract and assume responsibility for the instrument throughout the year. This program is only for your family if the cost of renting an instrument will stop your student from participating. Due to limited supply of certain instruments, first choice of instrument is not guaranteed.
Rental: This option is for families who do not qualify for a loaned instrument or wish to rent-to-own a new instrument. A rental company will be in the Somerville High School on September 12th to answer your questions and assist you rent the instrument of your choice.
